All of our ceramics classes are beginner friendly, run 6-8 weeks long, and includes creating up to 7 pieces, glazes, and in studio materials. If you have never taken a clay class before, we highly recommend one of our HANDBUILDING classes. They are a great introduction to clay before trying your hands at the more challenging skills required for using the wheel. No outside clay and glazes are allowed in our pottery studio. All adult classes include up to 4 hrs a week of additional studio time during designated open studio hrs. Pottery wheels during open studio hours are first come/first serve, but we ask that you be considerate of other students needs during those times as well. Both Open Studio and Classes are for enrolled students only. Please do not bring kids or other adults into the studio space during those time.
*Adult classes are for students over the age of 18. Please do not sign up your child for an adult class no matter how gifted or mature they are. Instead, look to book a private or semi-private lesson.
At Out of Step Clay we care deeply about teaching proper techniques to finding success on the potters wheel. Through 20+ years of teaching, Joshua has developed processes and techniques that have accelerated students grasp of the fundamentals of working with clay. For wheel students this does involve some close physical interactions with each students hands and arms to show where and when to use your body to control the clay on the wheel. This is not meant to overstep any personal boundaries, but to better instill processes and techniques. If you feel that this close contact would be uncomfortable for you in a learning setting, please reach out to us before enrolling in a class to make sure that our studio space would be an appropriate fit.
Our new studio policy is that each students is allowed to fire and glaze up to 6 pieces for free(you paid for that in your class fee). For any additional fired work, students will be asked to pay $15 per piece, with a total 10 pieces allowed to be fired in a 6-7 week class cycle.
Why did we make this change? Waste, waste, waste. In a six - seven week class there is time to make a great number of pieces, but not an enough time to finish the work. Which leads to heaps of unclaimed pieces being left behind in the studio, or people using open studio for months after your class has ended to “finish up” glazing. is a really great number of pieces to expect in a 6-7 week long class. But we understand some students desire to learn and practice can sometimes go above that. So chose your pieces well to put on the green ware shelf, or be prepared to pay for those additional pieces through our Venmo portal, or on our “classes” page on the website.
This means that we will no longer charge for up to 4 hrs a week of open studio hrs. We want our studio, and open studio in particular, to be a space of community and growth.
If you have any questions about our new open studio usage policy, please reach out to Joshua@outofstepclay.com
We tried to offer teen classes. We couldn’t fill the classes, so we no longer offer them. If you can rally 5 families of teens to sign up for a class, we can make it happen. But otherwise, we will not be offering them for the foreseeable future.
Due to the demand of our classes we do not allow make up classes for any missed class time (studio time can be made up during non-instruction open studio hrs). If a class is missed due to an issue on our end, we will make the appropriate refund or reschedule of class.
*REFUND POLICY* If you withdraw from a class 7 days before it begins you will be refunded in full minus a $50 processing fee. If you choose to withdraw after the first class, notify us under 7 days from your class start, or you are a new student and miss the first class you will receive a 50% refund(new students have to be able to make it to the first class or they will be removed from the class). After that there will be no refunds on classes.
All students or guardians will be required to sign a liability waiver to participate in a class.
Student work is intended for personal use or as gifts. No student production work or sale of student work will be produced using any Out of Step Clays’ materials or kilns.
