Out of Step Clay is a teaching, retail, and gallery space that looks to advance the ceramic arts through creativity, community, kindness, and compassion.
Our studio is focused on supporting the community in a positive way whether through engaging exhibitions, unique handmade items for purchase in our shop, or a fun class where you can learn to create your own masterpiece.
Classes stress the importance of process over product, while in a small group setting.
While we welcome all those who want to learn, the root of this mission is championing individuals who have felt “out of step” with the world, lifting them up and giving them a space to create with confidence. pottery classes ceramic classes ceramics

Are you ready to commit to learning a challenging, yet rewarding new skill? Then a wheel class is for you. You will get messy, you will get frustrated, but you will love the results. All our wheel classes are beginner friendly!
Want to work with clay stress free while enjoying a drink or a snack? Then a handbuilding class is a perfect place to start. Learn to sculpt any and everything out of clay. Also, way less messier than the potters wheel.
*There is no wheel use allowed with these classes*
**We highly recommend this class for new students**
Why do kids absolutely love clay classes? Because, for most of our lives we are taught to stay clean and not make a mess. But with clay we encourage controlled chaos! Fun and engaging handbuliding classes for kids as young at 4 years old!
*no wheel instruction allowed during group kid classes*
June and August camps are now available for registration. Be a part of the Monsters and Robots Project! Camps meet from 12:30 - 3:30 pm, Monday - Friday for 2 weeks.
At Out of Step Clay we are committed to implementation of the CDC recommended precautions to support everyone’s health and safety. If you are feeling ill, please stay home. We have a NO missed class make up policy, but under these extreme circumstances we will work the best we can to accommodate you.
Joshua is a ceramic artist and educator who has been teaching clay to children and adults for over 19 years. He has shown his unique work all over the country, including an artist in residence at the de Young Fine Arts Museum. Joshua is also the creator of the beloved children’s book series starring Melvin the Robot.
With our first gallery exhibition, Joshua will be sharing a multi-media narrative about a family of barn owls who took up residence near his Oakland home at the very start of the pandemic.
Through video, photograph, and sculpture, Joshua tells a story of family, survival, strength, and community coming together to champion a family of urban owls during one of the strangest times in recent history.
*Gallery is open to the public during non-class hours, so check the schedule above before planning your visit. Large groups are encouraged to schedule a visit before arriving.*
For the past 12 years, Joshua has been working collaboratively with the public on his Monsters and Robots Project. Started when a student of his asked if he could sculpt her monster drawing out of clay, this project blew up with thousands of drawing submitted and a residency at the famed de Young Fine Arts Museum.
Out of Step Clay offers creative opportunities for your group or individual needs.
Our workshops are a great way for corporate team building while creating a functional piece of art. It’s like camp, but while technically “working”.
And private lessons are a great way to overcome a challenging new skill, or refine a certain technique with dedicated and personal attention.
We also offer birthday parties where we work with you to come up with a memorable group activity.
